i think novara makes some good quality bikes. i own a novara element cyclocross bicycle and it has treated me well. rei carries them. check ou their website.
There’s isnt any best brands, but there are brands that are favoured by most riders. Such as Specialized, Kona, Norco, Giant, Scott, Trek, Gary Fisher, Jamis and etc…
These bike manufacturers are more favoured by riders because of their quality
I drool over the new carbon fiber frames by Ibis and Scott.
Suspension designs are very important in my book and shock and fork selection are very important. I tend to swear by Fox brand shocks and forks. DW-link and VPP suspension designs seem to be the best out there.

Subjective question there. Some of the best are Kona, Rocky Mountain, Santa Cruz, Specialized, Gary Fisher, Trek, Intense, Scott, Jamis, Norco, GT
