I’ve Just Discovered the Cannondale Quick! Sunday, January 29th, 2012

I need a new bike, but finding absolutely the right one has not been easy:
Although I like to cover the miles on the road, a pure road bike with drop handlebars and an uncomfortable saddle wouldn’t be right. I commute to the office by bike, so need something relaxing that will also take a bit of luggage. It needs to have mudguards too for when it’s wet.
While I like to take the odd trip along a track or path, I recognize that a mountain bike wouldn’t be right as the thick tyres make riding on the road just very hard – which is where I expect to do most of my riding.

There’s indeed no lack of choice in the market, with many suppliers keen to get a hold of your credit card. So it’s not easy to find your way through all the possibilities. A lot of the bikes that I looked at were simply not right – most of them didn’t have the right design style They were fine for leisure riding. But they were simply not designed for speed. Then somebody pointed out the Cannondale Quick.

Clearly one look at the bikes in the Quick range was enough to tell me that I had discovered the right bike:
Light alloy frame, clearly designed with speed in mind. The bikes higher up the range have carbon forks too.
A good range of gear ratios for (relatively) trouble-free hill-climbing. Once again, the superior bikes in the range have really nice road bike gears- something not often found on a hybrid bike.
Mini V-brakes which have lots of power but are straightforward to keep in good condition, unlike the disc brakes you often find.
The wheels on the models towards the top of the range are truly classy – the paired-spoke arrangement straight out of road-bike territory. OK, a normal arrangement with more spokes will be more durable, but for riding on the road, just great.
Pretty reasonable prices for what you get. You can get cheaper of course. But the range starts at about £600. If you have the cash, you can spend up to £1100 – but this is somewhat outside my price range.

So after doing a bit of research on the Net, I went along to the local dealer to try one out. I picked a model from roughly the middle of the range, which appeared to have all the functions that were most important to me. But it was at a price that was not going to break the bank.

I was very impressed with what I found. The bike felt stable, yet sprightly and nimble. The carbon forks absorbed most of the road vibration and the seating position was very relaxed indeed, perfect for extended trips. The gear change was slick, with enough low ratios for getting up the hills.

I could picture myself looking forward to getting on the bike, even after a hard day at the office.

The decision was somewhat of a no-brainer. I placed the order right away. My bike arrives next week. Can’t wait.

Different Mountain Bikes For Different Needs Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Go into any bike shop or department store bike rack and you’ll notice that the dominate models in today’s market are all mountain bikes. That’s a far cry from a couple of decades ago when everybody and his neighbour had to have a ten-speed racing bike. The truth is, we had no more knowledge of speed cycling back in the day, than the average consumer has about mountain bikes today. Needless to say, there are many different types of mountain bikes.

Trail Bikes
Trail bikes are the kind most often chosen by recreational consumers. Your co-workers ride them to and from the office while their kids tool around town on them. They are similar to cross country bikes but heavier and sturdier. Trail bikes are meant for moderate terrain on made-made urban trails, or gentle natural trails outside of town. They also make good street bikes that are safe and manoeuvrable in traffic.

Cross Country Bikes
Cross country racing was birthed around the same time as its BMX counterpart. It involves gentle to moderate terrain with an emphasis on climbing skills. Therefore, cross country bikes need to be lightweight and fast. Aluminium and carbon fibre composites are some of the materials used to make them. A higher tube head angle reduces manoeuvrability but increases speed.

Freeride Bikes
Freeride bikes take their name from the unpredictable nature of the riding experience they engender. They are built for moving downhill at high speed while navigating trees, rocks, and other obstacles. Freeride bikes generally have a low tube head angle and full suspension on both front and back. They are among the heaviest of all mountain bikes, so don’t expect an easy ride when climbing uphill.

Dirt Jumpers and Street Riders
Trick riders, whether in the dirt or on the street, need lightweight bikes that are well balanced. Kickouts and bar-turns require the handlebars to move freely, so you’ll find brakes on these bikes only in the rear. Low seat posts make flips easier, while strong frames are able to withstand the punishment of missing the landing. Dirt jumpers and street riders can have as many as nine gears.

Mountain Cross Bikes
The newest entry in the mountain bike market is the mountain cross design. Mountain cross is a racing event which combines downhill speed, plenty of obstacles, and up to four other riders all trying to occupy the same space. Mountain cross bikes must be rugged yet responsive, so they tend to have rigid frames, hardtails, and a slack tube head angle. Front suspension can be half or full.

Bike geometry, weight, wheel type, suspension, and braking systems are all considered by hard-core bikers before they make a choice. Different terrains and styles demand different bikes like the ones listed here.

Mountain biking is a rewarding sport filled with excitement and adventure at every turn. If you’re just getting started in mountain bike sports, be sure to consult a pro who can find the bike best suited for your activities.

Full Suspension Mountain Bikes Vs Hardtail Mountain Bikes – FAQ Friday, January 27th, 2012

I have started to loose count of the number of times I’ve heard questions such as, “What type of mountain bike should I buy?” and “What is the difference between a full suspension mountain bike and a hardtail mountain bike?” One type of bike is not better than the other. The choice between the two should be made based on the riders’ personal riding preferences, budget and physical capabilities. The FAQ below was compiled in order to help you with this all-important choice.

Question: What are full suspension bikes?
Answer: Also known as dual-suspension mountain bikes, these bikes have shock absorbers installed in both the front and rear tires.

Question: What are hardtail bikes?
Answer: Also known as front or single suspension mountain bikes, these bikes have shock absorbers installed in the front tire only.

Question: Which type of mountain bike tends to be faster?
Answer: Hardtail bikes tend to be faster and pedal easier in smooth terrain than full suspension mountain bikes because of the former’s light weight and stiff rear end.

Question: Which bike is better at handling obstacles and rough terrain?
Answer: Because of the shock absorbers in both the front and the rear, full suspension bikes outperform hardtails in rough terrain. The suspension absorbs the impact of obstacles and allows for more traction to be transferred to the ground.

Question: Which bike is better at climbing hills?
Answer: Because of their light weight and easier handling, hardtail mountain bikes are better at climbing hills. However, full suspension mountain bikes do outperform hardtails on hills that are made up of rough terrain.

Question: Which bike is easier on the body?
Answer: F.S. bikes are more comfortable than their counterparts. It minimizes the stress on riders’ arms and backs caused by vibrations and jolts during long rides.

Question: Which is more affordable?
Answer: Hardtail bikes are usally more affordable than full suspension bikes of similar quality.

Now you are equipped with the information you need to make the right choice. Happy Trailing!

Specialized Mountain Bikes – How a Little Customization Goes a Long Way Friday, January 27th, 2012

The market comprises many models of mountain bikes. Instead of placing an order of the particular model one desires, nowadays one can directly find the desired model in the showroom itself. Specialized mountain bikes often satisfy in a number of other ways than what is required.

The different ways in which a bike can be specialized depends on the way it is expected to execute. However some of the bikes are specialized in its looks and design without paying much attention in its execution or performance. Above all, it can be said that everything actually depends on one’s needs and desires and the willingness to pay for it.

In spite of specifying that many changes need not be made to the original bike, there are instances that ordinary bikes are changed to the extent of becoming specialized. Many people, for example, want frames of a particular kind without tampering with any other aspects of the mountain bike. Special smooth suspension seat posts and completely adaptable handlebars made of alloy are in much demand among the people and its demand is rising by the day.

Among the most common demand and needs the inclusion of specialized suspensions on the mountain bikes is rising. Some exclusively made tires suitable for particular types of terrain are also much in demand. People placing more importance on the designing and appearance of the bikes emphasize on specialized painting and designing of the bikes to make it look more attractive and appealing.

If one puts in effort on the personal front, i.e. working and doing only the things which are required, then one can save on the immense expenditure caused by specialization and customization. Depending on a shop for the things to be done can shoot up the expenses. Thus if one wants the cost to be minimized then one should learn to deal with his requirements himself, this will also enable him to customize according to his specification and give him great pleasure of doing it himself.

Some people opt for chief specialization which make a bike ride as well as make it look better. These customizations are kept aside for riders who know what they need and how these can affect the ride or the riding technique. This requires expense of about thousands of dollars apart from the cost of the bike without specialization.

One must be careful of the word specialized. Sometimes the meaning is much different from what it seems. Bike shops which use the word ‘specialized’ does not always sell bikes which are specialized. Specialized bikes do not mean that the particular bike is unique to one unless something very specific has been ordered. Apart from a key manufacturer no bike shop will give such guarantee.

The ones who are just beginning to ride, do not need specialized bikes. However the average bike riders know what they want in the bike shop and how can they get it in an internet bike shop. Some bikes are brought into the store for the purpose of sale after being specialized. In order to purchase the bike that suits one’s desires one has to pay a little more though he can easily avail that in a showroom. Before the bike can be taken out on trails one has to wait for the posts and some work has to be completed.

Either ordering it to a manufacturer or using an online bike store can let one get a specialized bike. This is one of the best ways to satiate one’s desires and at the same time fulfill the needs. Replacing or implementing new components requires knowing about the needs and wants of the rider and for that one needs to have enough biking experience. Specialized bikes which are supposed to more advance often does the opposite. Instead of enhancing the riding encounter, at times it spoils the ride of the biker. Thus specialization demands a lot of planning and thinking.

What Are Specialized Mountain Bikes? Friday, January 27th, 2012

Brand of bikes that have proven themselves over time are obviously the most remembered bikes for the public. These brands of specialized mountain bikes have the performance that only their kind can give, thus, giving you a riding experience that is far better than ordinary brands of bikes.

Each brand of specialized mountain bike has its unique feature. Mountain bikers rank these type of bikes among themselves for its ease of riding, speed, design, weight, and some other important factors for biking, which often include a combination of those features.

The first specialized mountain bike was produced by Stumpjumper. Since then, it marked its niche in the world of producing high performance mountain bikes. A Stumpjumper bike has good handling and agility features and it has continued to improve over the years.

Lightness gives mountain bikes really big advantage. It automatically translates to speed and ease of riding. Trek mountain bikes are known for this. Lightness is very important for a bike, especially if you want to carry your bike at some point in the track. Being light in weight is not the only advantage Trek mountain bike has. Its brand is also known for manufacturing high-end bikes.

Great bikes are big on trail. It can perform better in hard trails. But the disadvantage of riding this type of bike is that it is heavier since they are equipped with maestro suspension system, enabling the bike to have maximum control despite having to navigate difficult terrains. Maestro is a dual suspension system formulated by the manufacturer of Giant bikes. And as what bike experts’ say, suspension makes the bike. The bike may be heavy but it certainly is not too heavy for a good run.

If you want to have the best bike for a good run, branded bikes are at the top of the list. And this is where you should look into. Famous branded bikes are usually expensive, but you will certainly get what you pay for in this type of bike. The advantage of making a good experience of riding is always worth the money since mountain biking is surely a good way to enjoy and challenge your self.

The way people, specially those who are interested in bikes, talk around popular branded bikes proves that it is not just the prominence of the bike that is good about it. It is also because of its high standard that makes people love it.

Mountain Bike Bicycles Thursday, January 26th, 2012

There is a large variety of mountain bike bicycles out there, and the best one suited for you would depend on what you plan to do because this will determine the requirements you need from the bike.

Most of the mountain bike bicycles are built for rough riding and endurance. Some of these specialized bikes have twenty-six inch wheels while others have twenty-nine inch wheels. The wider wheels make the mountain bike sturdier and safer for riding in rough terrain.

There are also some lightweight mountain bikes designed for climbing and fast acceleration while still being able to absorb the shock of rough riding.

Have you ever thought about just hopping on a bike and seeing the country? How “free” and invigorating it must feel! I know there are people doing it all the time and I’m sure, to be able to do that, they have to have a decent mountain bike.

If you take a vacation by car, take note of how many vehicles you pass that have bicycles strapped to their cars. This gives one an idea of how popular riding a bike is and how much people love to ride, even while on vacation!

There are so many types of mountain bike bicycles out there that anyone is sure to find the one that would suit their particular needs. If you are one of those people that love to ride wherever you go, even while on vacation, there are actually good quality mountain bikes that fold up as small as 3 feet by 3 feet by 1 foot that fit conveniently into anyone’s trunk without the expense of buying a bike rack or the hassle of mounting a rack on your car and then strapping the bike to it.

When you do go on vacation, there certainly are places that will rent you bikes to ride, but it is better to use a bike that you are used to riding and more times than not, the bikes you rent are not “quality” bikes.

Not only is bike riding a fun pastime, it is also a very healthy one! The exercise you can get from riding a bike, whether it be on flat roads or inclines, bicycling will give you a cardiovascular workout as well as strength training for your legs.
