What is a good entry level mountain bike for a college campus? Mostly roads and trails?

A local bike shop has the Gary Fisher Mako for 289 and another has Giants starting at 275 (not sure of the model)

I have read mixed reviews about the Mako. Some say its good, others say its crap and has chain **** a lot. Anyone here have any experience or advice? Thanks ahead of time!
I have a kryptonite fahgettaboudit lock and I will bring it inside my apartment when I am home, so I’m not too too worried about it getting stollen. My biggest concern is some people report the chain falling off while changing gears and also chain ****. I believe it was on older year models though.

By: amsgator

About the Author:

Ok, so I am 15 years old and I want to get a new mountain bike for cruising around and going on dirt and open land (I live in a desert). I have a bike now but it is too small and I would love a new one that is big enough for me. Can I have advice on where to look at reviews and what to buy and what to stay away from? My parents are paying for it and there is no limit but my guess is that it should be around $400-$600. I would like a bike that has a loose suspension and good for going at decent speeds. Thanks!

By: kmanceltics

About the Author:
