I’ve Just Discovered the Cannondale Quick!
I need a new bike, but finding absolutely the right one has not been easy:
Although I like to cover the miles on the road, a pure road bike with drop handlebars and an uncomfortable saddle wouldn’t be right. I commute to the office by bike, so need something relaxing that will also take a bit of luggage. It needs to have mudguards too for when it’s wet.
While I like to take the odd trip along a track or path, I recognize that a mountain bike wouldn’t be right as the thick tyres make riding on the road just very hard – which is where I expect to do most of my riding.
There’s indeed no lack of choice in the market, with many suppliers keen to get a hold of your credit card. So it’s not easy to find your way through all the possibilities. A lot of the bikes that I looked at were simply not right – most of them didn’t have the right design style They were fine for leisure riding. But they were simply not designed for speed. Then somebody pointed out the Cannondale Quick.
Clearly one look at the bikes in the Quick range was enough to tell me that I had discovered the right bike:
Light alloy frame, clearly designed with speed in mind. The bikes higher up the range have carbon forks too.
A good range of gear ratios for (relatively) trouble-free hill-climbing. Once again, the superior bikes in the range have really nice road bike gears- something not often found on a hybrid bike.
Mini V-brakes which have lots of power but are straightforward to keep in good condition, unlike the disc brakes you often find.
The wheels on the models towards the top of the range are truly classy – the paired-spoke arrangement straight out of road-bike territory. OK, a normal arrangement with more spokes will be more durable, but for riding on the road, just great.
Pretty reasonable prices for what you get. You can get cheaper of course. But the range starts at about £600. If you have the cash, you can spend up to £1100 – but this is somewhat outside my price range.
So after doing a bit of research on the Net, I went along to the local dealer to try one out. I picked a model from roughly the middle of the range, which appeared to have all the functions that were most important to me. But it was at a price that was not going to break the bank.
I was very impressed with what I found. The bike felt stable, yet sprightly and nimble. The carbon forks absorbed most of the road vibration and the seating position was very relaxed indeed, perfect for extended trips. The gear change was slick, with enough low ratios for getting up the hills.
I could picture myself looking forward to getting on the bike, even after a hard day at the office.
The decision was somewhat of a no-brainer. I placed the order right away. My bike arrives next week. Can’t wait.

Different Mountain Bikes For Different Needs
Go into any bike shop or department store bike rack and you’ll notice that the dominate models in today’s market are all mountain bikes. That’s a far cry from a couple of decades ago when everybody and his neighbour had to have a ten-speed racing bike. The truth is, we had no more knowledge of speed cycling back in the day, than the average consumer has about mountain bikes today. Needless to say, there are many different types of mountain bikes.
Trail Bikes
Trail bikes are the kind most often chosen by recreational consumers. Your co-workers ride them to and from the office while their kids tool around town on them. They are similar to cross country bikes but heavier and sturdier. Trail bikes are meant for moderate terrain on made-made urban trails, or gentle natural trails outside of town. They also make good street bikes that are safe and manoeuvrable in traffic.
Cross Country Bikes
Cross country racing was birthed around the same time as its BMX counterpart. It involves gentle to moderate terrain with an emphasis on climbing skills. Therefore, cross country bikes need to be lightweight and fast. Aluminium and carbon fibre composites are some of the materials used to make them. A higher tube head angle reduces manoeuvrability but increases speed.
Freeride Bikes
Freeride bikes take their name from the unpredictable nature of the riding experience they engender. They are built for moving downhill at high speed while navigating trees, rocks, and other obstacles. Freeride bikes generally have a low tube head angle and full suspension on both front and back. They are among the heaviest of all mountain bikes, so don’t expect an easy ride when climbing uphill.
Dirt Jumpers and Street Riders
Trick riders, whether in the dirt or on the street, need lightweight bikes that are well balanced. Kickouts and bar-turns require the handlebars to move freely, so you’ll find brakes on these bikes only in the rear. Low seat posts make flips easier, while strong frames are able to withstand the punishment of missing the landing. Dirt jumpers and street riders can have as many as nine gears.
Mountain Cross Bikes
The newest entry in the mountain bike market is the mountain cross design. Mountain cross is a racing event which combines downhill speed, plenty of obstacles, and up to four other riders all trying to occupy the same space. Mountain cross bikes must be rugged yet responsive, so they tend to have rigid frames, hardtails, and a slack tube head angle. Front suspension can be half or full.
Bike geometry, weight, wheel type, suspension, and braking systems are all considered by hard-core bikers before they make a choice. Different terrains and styles demand different bikes like the ones listed here.
Mountain biking is a rewarding sport filled with excitement and adventure at every turn. If you’re just getting started in mountain bike sports, be sure to consult a pro who can find the bike best suited for your activities.
